IIM college fees and education loan guide for IPMAT students

First, Understand How Five-Year IPM Fees Work

Most IIMs publish the fees for the first three undergraduate years separately.

The fourth and fifth years are generally charged according to the MBA fee prevailing when the student enters the MBA phase.

Therefore, an exact five-year total shown today is usually an estimate, not a guaranteed price.

Important: Do Not Compare Only the Tuition Fee

Students and families should also account for:

  • Hostel charges.
  • Mess expenses.
  • Laptop and study-material costs.
  • Travel expenses.
  • Refundable and non-refundable deposits.
  • International exchange expenses, where applicable.
  • Annual fee revisions.
  • Interest costs if the programme is financed through an education loan.

How an IIM Education Loan Works

  1. Secure admission and download the official offer letter and fee schedule.
  2. Compare education-loan products based on the interest rate, floating-rate benchmark, collateral requirement, co-borrower requirement, moratorium and prepayment conditions.
  3. Apply through the PM-Vidyalaxmi portal, a bank’s education-loan portal or the institute’s designated bank branch.
  4. Submit the required documents, including:
    • KYC documents.
    • Class X and XII marksheets.
    • Entrance examination result.
    • Admission offer or proof of admission.
    • Official cost and fee schedule.
    • Co-applicant income documents.
    • Bank statements.
  5. After the loan is sanctioned, the bank normally disburses the programme fees term-wise directly to the institute.
  6. Interest may continue to accumulate during the course and moratorium period. Repayment begins according to the conditions stated in the loan-sanction letter.

PM-Vidyalaxmi: The Useful Part

For merit-based admission to designated Quality Higher Education Institutions, PM-Vidyalaxmi provides a digital route to collateral-free and guarantor-free education loans.

Students with a family income of up to ₹8 lakh may qualify for a 3% interest subvention on education loans of up to ₹10 lakh during the moratorium period, subject to the scheme’s rules.

Students must check whether their institution, programme and admission route qualify under the scheme.

SBI’s Scholar Loan is one example of an education-loan product for students entering selected institutions.

It currently lists:

  • Up to 100% financing.
  • No processing fee.
  • A repayment period of up to 15 years.
  • Security requirements that vary according to the institute’s category.

Always compare the actual loan-sanction letters instead of relying only on an advertisement or general product page.

Before Signing the Loan

  • Calculate the total interest under a realistic repayment scenario.
  • Confirm which expenses are covered by the loan.
  • Check the margin-money requirement.
  • Confirm collateral and co-borrower requirements.
  • Read the insurance and prepayment clauses.
  • Keep a lower-fee college option available until the family is comfortable with the complete financial plan.

Setwise can help a family place expected examination options, programme fees and the likely education-loan requirement on one decision sheet before the student locks their college preference.
